Application of Simulation and Queueing Theory to Scheduling Community Mental Health Assessment

A simulation study showing the benefits of local queue sharing for mental health assessment appointments across centres in Devon. Pilot implementation has demonstrated significant reductions in waiting times.

(Developed for Devon Partnership Trust by The Peninsula Collaboration for Health Operational Research and Development (PenCHORD))

Emergency Medical Services Modelling in Wales

This illustrates how forecasting, queueing theory, scheduling, location analysis and discrete event simulation can be integrated into workforce capacity planning tools to assist the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST) with capacity planning issues and the deployment of emergency vehicles

(Developed for Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST) by School of Mathematics, Cardiff University)

Redesigning Emergency Stroke Pathways to Maximise Thrombolysis Rates

A simulation study of emergency stroke care showing the impact of different interventions. Application has greatly improved the delivery of thrombolysis at the client hospital.

(Developed for Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by The Peninsula Collaboration for Health Operational Research and Development (PenCHORD))

System Model of Reablement Services

Developing a systems model to explore the impact of optimised reablement services for Social Care.

(Developed for Social Services Improvement Agency, Wales by Whole Systems Partnership)

National Dementia Strategy Model

A systems model to support the implementation of the National Dementia Strategy in a given locality.

(Developed for Various clients, including North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus and the Sussex Dementia Partnership. by Whole Systems Partnership)

National End of Life Care Model

A needs based model for costing the workforce elements of community based care for a given population for the last year of life in the context of changing underlying demographic trends and national policy priorities.

(Developed for National End of Life Care Programme by Whole Systems Partnership)

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)

A modelling project to find new ways of designing processes to achieve better patient flow, deliver greater care, staff support, and provide better value-for-money for the delivery of mental health services in South Tyneside

(Developed for South Tyneside PCT by Focused-On Ltd)

Cancer Reform Strategy: Age Extension in Breast Screening

A 3-phase modelling study looking at site locations, screening schedules, and staffing in order to assist in plans for extending breast screening services in Greater London.

(Developed for NHS Barking & Dagenham, NHS Havering, NHS Redbridge, and NHS Brentwood plus the Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRT) by Focused_On Limited)

Triage to Critical Care in a Pandemic

Modelling informed a debate on restricting access to paediatric intensive care during 2009 influenza pandemic.

(Developed for Great Ormond Street Hospital by Clinical Operational Research Unit, UCL)

VLAD – Monitoring Outcomes for Cardiac Surgery

Operational Researchers worked with leading surgeons to develop monitoring tool now used world-wide

(Developed for Department of Health (UK) by Clinical Operational Research Unit working with Professor Tom Treasure, then of St Georges Hospital)

MASHnet Case Studies

This listing addresses the frequently expressed need for more information about examples of implemented applications of modelling and simulation within the NHS. It provides a simple, internet-based directory of modelling applications that have been used within the health services.

Every system shown in this list should be in use, or have been used, in some capacity to support an aspect of health service delivery. The perceived success or otherwise of a system does not affect inclusion since many important lessons can be learned from systems that have ‘failed’ or are outdated.

PLEASE NOTE: Inclusion within this Case Study listing does not imply that MASHnet endorses or recommends a specific system listed.
