Professor Sally Brailsford

Professor of Management Science

I received a BSc in Mathematics from the University of London, followed by about 2 years of nurse training and (much later) by an MSc and PhD in Operational Research from the University of Southampton. I have worked in healthcare modelling for over 20 years.  My research interests include simulation methodologies, discrete event simulation, system dynamics, health service research and disease modelling, and the modelling of human behaviour in healthcare systems. I am on the editorial board of Health Care Management Science and the Journal of Simulation.

Requirements

  • I believe modelling in healthcare should be about dealing with real-world issues and not "toy" academic problems. The sort of challenges I most enjoy tackling typically require a flexible modelling approach and often involve human behavioural factors. I am interested in both complex strategic issues and more detailed operational problems such as reducing A&E waiting times. I enjoy being part of a team, and am happiest getting out and about talking to staff and patients.
  • Here at Southampton we run over 50 MSc projects every summer, and are always looking for interesting problems for our smart, analytical students to work on! Please contact me for more information.
